Overview
Lyris is a music player for iOS that plays the music on servers you run yourself (Navidrome or another Subsonic-compatible server, or Jellyfin). We, the developers of Lyris, do not run any server for the app and do not collect, receive or store any personal data. What Lyris knows stays on your device or goes to the services described below.
Data stored on your device
Lyris keeps the following on your device, inside its own sandbox:
Local database
- A copy of your library's metadata: artists, albums, tracks, playlists, ratings and favourites
- Your play history, used for recommendations
- Your play queue and preferences
- Cached recommendations and album details
Files
- Music you download for offline listening, with its artwork and lyrics
- A temporary cache of recently played audio and artwork, which iOS may clear at any time
iOS Keychain
- Your music server address, user name and access token (Lyris stores a token derived from your password, not the password itself)
- Your Lidarr server address and API key, if you set up Lidarr
- Your ListenBrainz user token, if you add one
- Custom HTTP headers you configure for a server (for example Cloudflare Access)
Signing out of a server deletes its credentials and headers from the Keychain. Deleting the app deletes the local database and files; a later reinstall starts with an empty Keychain.
Services Lyris communicates with
Your music server (Navidrome / Subsonic, or Jellyfin)
To browse your library, stream and download music, show artwork and lyrics, and record plays, ratings, favourites and playlists. Your server is operated by you, or by whoever you choose.
Your Lidarr server (optional)
Only if you set it up: to look up artists and albums and send requests to your own Lidarr instance. Lyris itself downloads nothing from Lidarr's sources.
MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive
To identify artists and albums and to show album details, cover art and recommendations, Lyris sends artist names, album titles and MusicBrainz identifiers from your library to musicbrainz.org and requests cover images from coverartarchive.org (served by the Internet Archive). No account or identifier of yours is sent; like any web request, these services see your IP address. These are public, non-profit open-data services run by the MetaBrainz Foundation and the Internet Archive.
While a radio station plays, the title it broadcasts is sent to MusicBrainz to find the song's album and show its cover. You can turn this off in Settings.
ListenBrainz
Lyris uses listenbrainz.org in three ways:
- Recommendations (always): to find artists similar to the ones you listen to, Lyris sends MusicBrainz artist identifiers to ListenBrainz's public endpoints, without any account information.
- Hot tracks and popular tracks (always): to mark the most-played tracks of an album and to show an artist's popular tracks, Lyris sends MusicBrainz track and artist identifiers to ListenBrainz's public endpoints, along with your token if you added one, and no other account information.
- With your token (only if you add one): to submit the tracks you listen to (scrobbling, if you turn it on), to show popular albums for an artist, and to match tracks to MusicBrainz. Your token is sent only with these requests.
ListenBrainz's own privacy policy applies to what you submit to it.
Radio Browser
When you search for a radio station, Lyris sends your search and the chosen country to radio-browser.info, a free community directory of radio stations. When you add a station found there, Lyris tells the directory once, which helps popular stations rank higher. No account or identifier of yours is sent. Station logos are loaded from the addresses the directory lists, and streams from the stations' own servers.
Artwork hosts chosen by your server
When your server provides artist images hosted elsewhere (for example on a music service's image servers), Lyris loads them from those addresses.
Purchases
Lyris is free to download, with a 7-day free trial and a one-time purchase to unlock it. Both go through Apple's App Store: payment is handled entirely by Apple, under Apple's privacy policy, and we receive no payment details and no personal information. To know whether your trial is running or the app is unlocked, Lyris reads your purchases from the App Store on your device and keeps that answer on your device only.
What we do not do
- We do not use any analytics or advertising SDK
- We do not track you across apps or websites
- We do not receive your listening history, library or credentials
- We do not have a backend or database of any kind
If you share crash reports or usage data with developers in iOS settings, Apple provides us with anonymous crash reports under Apple's own privacy policy.
Children's privacy
Lyris does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and, for material changes, mention it in the App Store release notes.
